Aztech Services Australia (Aztech Services) and McMahon Services (MCM) joined forces for Built to remediate and remove a friable asbestos contaminated roof on a heritage listed building in Sydney’s CBD.
During refurbishment works Built commenced removal of the building’s roof in preparation for the erection of a tower crane. During the roof removal, friable asbestos contamination and non-friable asbestos products were discovered.
Prior to the asbestos discovery, during the planning process, Built had scheduled a road closure to erect a tower crane on site. Aztech Services and MCM were the only contractors that could guarantee the completion of the remediation in time for the road closure and tower crane erection.
Innovative safety measures and removal methods were developed in full consultation with Built’s project and safety management team. Perimeter scaffold was erected and a roof structure was constructed over the existing roof. The roof level and level below were fully encapsulated and under negative pressure for the friable removal. Aztech Services and MCM completed works successfully, delivering the project 4 days prior to the road closure with no elevated readings or Lost Time Injuries.
